We believe our content falls under Fair Use for the following reasons:

  • Free to Read: The summaries are available for free. Anyone can read them at no cost and without an account.

  • Transformative: The summaries are written in our own expression, style, and structure across the entire 73,530-book catalog. For example, every book is summarized in a 7 to 12-key takeaway format with a specific 2 to 3-paragraph structure for each takeaway, with each paragraph starting with a few bold words summarizing the paragraph.

  • Substantially Short: We aim for about 2,000 words, which is roughly 2% of the book's length, comparable to a 2-minute movie trailer for a 2-hour movie. We believe a 50x shorter text cannot replace the need to read the original. If 2,000 words can indeed replace the need to read the actual book, the book probably lacked content and should have been written in 2,000 words in the first place.

  • Positive Effects on the Market: We funnel a significant number of readers to Amazon, Audible, and Kindle for book purchases. We get a small commission from the sales, which financially aligns the incentives between the writers and SoBrief. Anecdotally, we hear from users that SoBrief is better than Goodreads reviews for making purchase decisions and that SoBrief is a great tool for reviewing learnings after reading a book, which we personally agree with.
